If you're looking for an instrument that ignites music-making rather than slowing it down, look no further than the new Roland Fantom. Every aspect of this 76-note synthesizer keyboard‹from its simplified user interface and sequencer to its variable Arpeggiator and Rhythm generator -has been thoughtfully designed to keep the music flowing, whether performing or in the studio. And with its expandable XV-Series sound engine and digital outputs, the Fantom has everything you could ever want in a workstation keyboard- except the work.

Features:
* 76-note workstation designed to integrate performance and composition
* Professional XV-5080 sound engine with 64 voices and 16 multitimbral parts
* 1,024 Patches (640 Preset, 128 User and 256 GM2 sounds), plus 29 rhythm sets
* New variable Arpeggiator and Rhythm generator with realtime control via knobs, buttons and light-sensing D-Beam
* "Always-active" high-resolution sequencer with Realtime Phrase Sequencing
* Large, angled LCD display with soft keys for faster, more intuitive operation
* 24-bit reverb, plus chorus and 90 multi-effects like COSM Amp Modeling
* Expandable via two SRX- and one SR-JV80-Series Wave Expansion Board(s)
* Superb sound quality with 24-bit D/A converters and S/PDIF digital outputs
* Sleek titanium chassis with low-profile floppy drive for storing User data

Nice wish list. However, if I was making up a wishlist, I'd wish for the sound source to be an XV-5080 with matching expandability...

Seems a comparison to an XV-3080 would be a better comparison for the Fantom.

This unit apparently has no sample playback function (which is effectively ham-stringed in the XV-5080 anyway, with continuing OS problems in sample file management that won't allow you to convert more than a few CD-ROMs at a time, for example).

This one has 1/2 the voices and parts of an XV-5080. Two SRX and one SR-JV? A step forward, you say?

Perhaps this Fantom should remain a Phantom, kept under wraps until Roland releases a true contender based on the XV-5080 engine(with further support for it's OS, as well as software development for file management/patch editing).

Roland never learned what my MaMa told me: finish what they started before taking on another project.
